If no one asks the question, your answer is irrelevant.
No matter how brilliant, necessary, correct or urgently needed – it’s irrelevant without the question, first.
You and I as professionals worked for our hard-won expertise. We see solutions, answers, possibilities, shifts. They are important, and we want to share them, help others join, improve a thing, a person, people, peoples and society.
So we excitedly, with much anticipation, deliver our answers, solutions, possibilities and pathways to shifts. But the person, people, peoples and society can’t hear us, see us, get us or understand us.
He is consumed by the problem. She is mired in the ‘what is wrong’. They are seeking, but from their position as some form of lost in the frustration of the problem. They don’t know the solution, and the solution is part of the question they need to ask.
It’s up to us – the counsellors, the advisors, the teachers, the leaders, the healers, the ones with the expertise – to find those who need, crave, are thirsty for what we’ve got. When we find them, first, we meet them where they are. Understand them. Genuinely want to be of benefit, integrity, value.
Only when we have gathered them within their problems, problems for which we know we are the solution, can we begin the relationship. It’s about them, their world, their moments – not us. Their hearts, their souls, their pain and their lostness – not us.
Find them, first.
Put them first.
Engage them, first.
Then we can help them ask the question, in their own mind and lives, which leads directly to you as answer and solution.
Audience first.
Met and valued.
Problems understood.
They can take the step to the question.
Our answers are presented. Welcomed. Appreciated. And, more importantly, put to use.
Then, and only then, can the transformation they seek be effective and obtained.
That’s the important thing, right?
